Scratchboard & Mixed Media (color added using inks and/or pastels)
What is Scratchboard?
The Scratchboard technique is a two-dimensional, subtractive process. This art is created on Archival Ampersand Claybord (scratchboard). The ink is scratched off using sharp tools like an Xacto knife, etching tools and other scratching tools. Color is applied by using pastels and inks to the surface and then re-scratched to add details. Adding color takes an extra amount of time! How Long Does It Take? It takes many hours (25 to 40 hours) to complete a 5x7 art piece. If color is added, more hours are put into the artwork. Large pieces can take hundreds of hours to complete. Varnish Process Each piece is varnished using Archival UV protectant varnish. FIVE layers are applied to each piece. This process seals the artwork and it then can be framed without glass. |
